INDUSTRIAL ASSET INTEGRITY - During Storage and Hibernation

Imagem1.jpg

Maintenance of a product or metal part begins from the moment it is finished (exits the lathe e.g.) and will be packed following for delivery or to stock.

How to properly store and protect against ATMOSPHERIC CORROSION, from small automotive spare parts, valves, metal pipes, plates and even equipment and parts stored inside sheds and warehouses?

SURPLUS is able to provide the two most used techniques for protection in STORAGE:

ADDITION OF LIQUID CORROSION INHIBITORS (W) OR STEAM PHASE -VCI (A And G SPECIAL CASES). The VCI (Steam Corrosion Inhibitor) is used in different ways in the STORAGE OF PARTS and interior of EQUIPMENT.

Ø

COATING WITH TEMPORARY PROTECTIONS (Oils and greases based on petroleum, zinc silicate, acrylic varnish, desquamable vinyl film, etc.) most used in the storage of parts in sheds, containers and warehouses.

SURPLUS gives the preference for the application of DAUBERT CROMWELL products, the world leader in the market of temporary protections and volatile corrosion inhibitors (VCI), which specifies that the correct choice of a temporary protection to pack a metal part must be made based on a series of questions / parameters:

METAL - What is the metal/product that requires protection? Ferrous, non-ferrous, multi-metallic or specialty? • What is the surface profile and its existing condition? What is its shape and size?

EXPOSURE - Under what conditions will the object be exposed? Indoor covered? Indoors? Outdoors uncovered? Will there be temperature changes? Consider heat, cold, humidity.

TIME - How long will the object need corrosion protection? l 1 - 12 Months? l 12 - 60 Months? l +60 Months?

FORM - What type of corrosion protection is desired?   Contact Corrosion Inhibitors - Liquids for corrosion prevention l Volatile Corrosion Inhibitors - VCI paper, crack, film and bags; emitters; Liquids.

APPLICATION - How will corrosion protection be applied? Where will corrosion protection be applied? Who will pack the metal object in VCI packaging or apply the anti-corrosive product?

REMOVAL - What are the expectations for removal? Time? Equipment?

UPSTREAM - What is the condition of the object before it is protected? • Have you been exposed to corrosion? What were the last procedures before applying the protection?

PREFERENCES - What are the environmental expectations? (VOC limits, waste disposal, emission standards and regulations, etc.) Does any specification need to be met, such as military or corporate? Other preferences?

What is the VCI - Vapor or Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor?

They are chemical compounds, organic or inorganic corrosion inhibitors, which vaporize from paper or plastic film and are attracted to the loaded surface of the metal by virtue of its polar orientation. When metals are packed or packed in VCI, chemicals volatilize in the packaging environment, forming a protective molecular layer on the metal surface.

This layer of molecules protects charged surfaces and creates
a continuous barrier that prevents oxidation by preventing moisture, salt,
dirt, oxygen and other corrosion-causing materials are deposited
directly on the metal and cause oxidation and corrosion

They can be low, medium or high steam pressure. The high pressure steam
are used for immediate protection and those of medium and low for the
maintenance of protection over time.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF VCI PRODUCTS (Daubert Cromwell)

sur-004.jpg

SOME ACTIVITIES OF A HIBERNATION PLAN:

Specify the preservation system by component type.

Set the periodicity for each type or group of types of items to be preserved.

Develop the Hibernation Manual and computerize programming routines.

Identify accessories and spares related to the EQUIPMENT TAG and adopt a Checklist.

Prepare daily report of the field results and their respective pending.

Contemplate the activities of inspection, maintenance and repairs of equipment and facilities, aiming at the actions necessary for starting the unit: commissioning, hydrostatic pressure and watertightness tests, conditioning and pre-operation.

Most industrial areas use corrosion protection by volatile corrosion inhibitors (VCI)

sur-005.jpg

FORMS OF APPLICATION :

• For external protection:

1.Plastic film: wrap the equipment, instrument, valve, flanged connection, as in a package.

2.Oils, greases and waxes: apply on screws, cases and anchors.

3.Lubrication with mineral oil: apply in housing, couplings and machine bearings.

4.Vaseline, bubble wrap and adhesive tape: apply on equipment identification plates.

5.Capsules: use in electronic devices, such as integrated circuits, printed circuit boards, computers, PLCs, SDCDs, SCMDs.

PIPE COMPONENTS:
pipes, filters, steam purges, valves, spring brackets, expansion joints, heating systems (steam tracing or electrical tracing) etc.

sur-006.png

• Preservation: external application of greases, oils and varnishes, protection of bevel and paint, etc. and internally protection with VCI.

FORMS OF APPLICATION : • For internal protection:

a- Volatile POWDER Corrosion Inhibitor: applied with air blasting equipment or similar, in different openings, such as nozzles, drains, vents, instrument sockets, and others, in order to ensure uniform distribution inside the equipment or pipe.

b- VOLATILE CORROSION INHIBITOR WET WAY: applied by slicing directly in the area to be protected, filling the equipment through nozzles, drains, vents, instrument sockets, and others, in order to ensure

a uniform distribution inside the equipment or pipe. Another option is to promote the circulation of the solution through the pipes and closing the openings to the outside.

STATIC EQUIPMENT: pressure vessels, towers, reactors, heat exchangers, air coolers, process filters, ovens, boilers, desalters, pre combustion air heaters, soot blowers, silencers, tanks, spheres, etc.

sur-007.png

• Preservation: inertization with N2 or protection with VCI internally; application of greases and oil on external components; protection of the flange faces of the nozzles.

ROTATING EQUIPMENT OR MACHINERY: pumps, compressors, turbines, mixers, mechanical seals, agitators, blowers, fans, reducers, bearings, couplings, hydraulic units and actuators, etc.

sur-008.png

• Preservation: protect from water and rotate periodically, keep properly lubricated the internal machines, apply oil, greases or varnishes to their machined external parts, mechanical couplings and seals, protection of flanges from nozzles and accessories, placement of wooden boxes, etc.
